Moran athletes compete in meets

Moran began its spring sports schedule with high school, junior high, and elementary track meets over the last two weeks.

On Tuesday, March 7, Moran students were competing in the Early tennis tournament. Results will be reported next week.

High school track athletes return to action Thursday, March 9 (today) at Rising Star.

High School

The Lady Bulldogs began competition Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Breckenridge relays meet, then boys and girls teams competed at Trent on Friday, March 3.

At Breckenridge, Alli Scott placed in three events. The senior won the high jump at 5-0, ran 16.60 in the 100 hurdles to finish third, and was fifth in the long jump at 15-3¾.

Running the 1600 were Jayla Bussell (8:30), Jordan Martin (7:30), and Terra Thompson (12:05). Samantha Hinkle and Kacenda Thompkins competed in the shot put and discus.

Moran scored 17 points to finish ninth out of 14 teams.

The Moran girls doubled their scoring with 34 points at Trent.

Scott won the high jump (5-1) and 100 (12.98), finished second in the 100 hurdles (16.87) and third in the long jump (15-3).

Bussell competed in the 800 (3:18.53) and the 400 (1:22.0). Thompson ran 11:05 in the 1600, dropping her time by a full minute, while Thompkins showed improvement in the shot put and discus.

For the Moran boys, Danny O’Keefe and Chase Murk both competed in the 100, 200, and 400. O’Keefe ran times of 13.25 in the 100, 27.89 in the 200 and 1:07 in the 400. Murk ran 15.14, 33.11, and 1:19.

Junior High

Moran’s junior high teams competed at Zephyr on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Their second meet was Tuesday, March 6, at Trent. Results will be reported next week.

At Zephyr, five boys and two girls competed.

Garrett Hamilton competed in the 200, 400, shot put, and discus. Landen Moreno competed in the 100, 200, shot, and discus. Dylan Herrod and Dylan Kinman competed in the 100, 200, and 400. Miguel Rodriguez competed in the shot and discus.

For the girls, Maekayla Kersey competed in 100, 200, shot, and discus, and Sarah Mendoza competed in the shot and discus.

Elementary

Moran elementary students competed in their first track meet Saturday, March 4 at Santa Anna.

“For the first time competing in something like that, the little ones did well,” Moran coach John Hughes said. “We don’t have any results, but we do know that the future for Moran athletics is going to be bright.”
