The Moran Bulldogs wrapped up their boys basketball season Tuesday, Feb. 15 with a 74-46 loss at Baird.

The Bulldogs finished the season 2-16 overall, 1-9 in District 13-1A.

Baird opened up a 24-11 lead in the first quarter and increased the margin to 42-16 at halftime. The Bears outscored the Bulldogs 32-20 in the second half.

Arren Hawley, Moran’s lone senior, led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Caleb York scored eight points and Ellis Hise added seven, while Connor Hail scored two.

Spring Sports

Moran saw the opening of its track and field season pushed back a week as the threat of inclement weather led to the cancellation of the Rising Star meet scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 24 (today).

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will now open their season Friday, March 4, at Trent.

Hurdler Alli Scott, a state qualifier last year, heads up the girls lineup. Moran also returns regional qualifiers Johnnie Hise (800 meters) and Hannah Noble (100 meters).

The Moran girls also return three of four legs from the regional qualifying 800 relay. Coach John Hughes said he expects to have one relay team this spring, but is considering which distance to compete in.

“I’ve got a decent group of girls coming back,” Hughes said. We’re going to meets at Cisco, Breckenridge, and Graham for the tougher competition. I’m not worried about winning meets; I just want good times.”

Hughes said the boys team is waiting on two athletes nursing ankle injuries, but expects to compete in some field events as well as sprint and middle-distance events.

Moran plans to compete in tennis and golf this spring depending on availability of athletes. Jo Hise will coach tennis, and Matt Hise will coach golf.

Getting a Look

Hughes said senior Arren Hawley will attend a football tryout at Cisco College on Saturday, Feb. 26.

“Cisco’s looking for a punter for next year,” Hughes said. “Maybe we can make something happen for Arren.”
