[EDITOR’S NOTE:

At press time on Wednesday, there were rumors that the UIL had cancelled all athletic events for the remainder of the school year, but the News was not able to confirm that in time for this edition. If that proves to be the case, most of the facts in this story are obsolete.]

Moran athletic director and head track coach John Hughes had planned to take a large team to the junior high and high school track meet in Gordon on Thursday, March 19, but the event, along with other University Interscholastic League sanctioned activities, has been postponed due to concerns about COVID-19.

“There’s a positive and negative to it,” said Hughes. “On the positive side, it allows some of our kids to get healthy from some nagging injuries they have been dealing with. The negative is we lose some competition; but the overall health of everyone is far more important.”

All UIL sanctioned contests, rehearsals, practices, and workouts from March 16-29 were suspended to try and “support the health and safety of our students and communities” during the outbreak of the coronavirus in Texas.

“Just like all the other school districts in the state, we are just going to have to wait and see what happens,” said Hughes earlier this week.
