Moran’s varsity basketball teams traveled to Rising Star for tournament action last week, with each team putting their first tally in the winners column. The high school players were also on the road in Bryson for games on Tuesday, Nov. 26, with the girls taking the court first at 6:00 p.m. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

Lady Bulldogs

The varsity girls lost to the visiting Blanket Wildcats on Tuesday, Nov. 19 and split games at the Rising Star basketball tournament later the same week.

“We opened up our home slate of games against Blanket,” said coach John Hughes. “We got beat, but the girls have continued to improve with each game despite what the scores show. These young ladies amaze me with their grit and determination.”

Scoring for the Lady Bulldogs in the 31-53 loss to the Blanket Lady Tigers were November Meredith 16, Johnnie Hise 8, Reshaley Schafer 3, Dariann Hawley 2, and Hannah Rogers 2.

Moran beat the Rising Star Lady Cats 41-25 in the first round of the tourney in Rising Star on Thursday, Nov. 21.

“It was a good hard- fought game,” said Hughes. “I’m extremely proud of the girls. And again, they continue to improve with each game.”

Scoring for the Lady ’Dawgs were Hise 14, Meredith 13, Schafer 8, Rogers 4, and Emily Murk 2.

Moran fell 16-50 to Strawn in round two on Friday, Nov. 22.

“Day two of the tournament didn’t go well,” said the coach. “On top of losing to Strawn, we had a couple of our girls get injured. So we made the decision not play on Saturday and risk more injuries.”

Scoring for Moran were Hise 10, Meredith 4, and Rogers 2.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the week with a 1-7 record on the season, including the forfeit in the final round of the tournament.

Bulldogs

The Bulldogs opened their basketball season with a win over the Rising Star Wildcats during the first round of the Rising Star Tournament at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21.

They returned to play the winner of Thursday’s Sidney and Panther Creek matchup on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Results of the round two game were not available as of press time and will be reported next week.

Coach Robert Londerholm has six players on the boys varsity team. Representing Moran are Arren Hawley, Lyric Huskey, Zac Keith, Corey Miller, Harley Schafer and Jonas Sotelo.

“There is a period of adjustment as we begin the season with the players learning a new system,” the coach said. “We have been working on some fundamentals of defense, shooting, and some offensive and inbounds sets.”

The players have shown a commitment to learning what is being taught on the court and are continuing to build on the concepts of family, hard work, and commitment to each other that was started with coach John Hughes and the football team, according to Londerholm.

“I hope the players learn how to become responsible adults with a strong commitment to wholesome values,” said Londerholm.

Junior High

The junior high basketball boys and girls teams played Gordon for their season openers on Monday, Nov. 18.

“They both lost, but they played extremely hard,” said Hughes.
