Longball fundraiser set Friday

The Lion baseball team was edged out by a walk-off run on an error last Friday to drop their second district game against Haskell.

Albany was on the road Tuesday in Hamlin, bringing back a 15-0 win against the 1A Pipers.

The team will be off on Friday, but the annual fundraiser including a hamburger supper and long ball batting fundraiser will start at 6:00 p.m. with all proceeds benefiting the baseball program.

Members of the team are selling tickets for the hamburger supper, as well as gathering pledges for the batting competition.

The Lions will start the second round of District 8-2A action next Tuesday, hosting the Stamford Bulldogs in a 5:00 p.m. game.

With only four teams competing in the 2A division of the district, all four teams will advance into the playoffs.

Following the 10-9 loss to Haskell last Friday, the Lions are 10-6 overall and 1-2 in district.

The Lions saw an early lead against Haskell disappear after giving up six runs in the fourth, but the score was tied at 9-9 going into the bottom of the seventh. An error cost the Lions the game with a run scored by the Indians.

“The guys played a good head-to-head game against Haskell,” coach David Fairchild said. “It was a tough game in a tough district, and one error cost us.”

The coach commended pitcher Ben West who went all seven innings, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out eight at the plate.

“Ben pitched well, and Jackson Chapman and B.J. Morris had unbelievable games at the plate for us, combining for six RBIs,” Fairchild said. “It was a great game, but unfortunately we came up on the wrong end.”

The coach added that all four 2A teams in the district competed evenly in the first round.

“It is just a strong district, and everyone is playing well,” he said. “We start the second round next week, and we need to have a good run for the final three games.”

The Lions jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first inning and scored eight more runs in the third to seal the win.

“It was a good win for us,” the coach said. “We were able to suit up both our varsity and JV guys. Blaine (Kayga) did a good job pitching for four inn-ings, and he did a good job at the plate going three for three.”

Kayga allowed one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out three.

Jackson Chapman came in to close the game, giving up a run on no hits and one walk. He struck out one batter.
