Local baseball tournament cancelled

The Lions varsity baseball team defeated ­DeLeon last Tuesday, then played four games at the Glen Rose tournament on Thursday through Saturday, with a 1-2-1 result.

The tournament that Albany was scheduled to host has been cancelled due to teams dropping out because of cases of the coronavirus at some of the schools on the schedule.

However, Albany was able to sign up for a Windthorst tournament that starts Thursday (today). The Lions will face Windthorst on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in Windthorst, then will return on Friday to play Archer City at Archer City at 12:00 p.m. Albany will go back to Windthorst on Friday to play Peaster at 4:00 p.m.

Currently, no games are on the schedule next week due to spring break.

Albany will host Stamford on Tuesday, March 23 to open district play.

The Lions posted a 14-3 win over DeLeon on March 2.

Cade Neve, Jackson Chapman, and Caden Price combined on the mound, giving up only one hit. Neve had six strikeouts, followed by Chapman with five and Price with one.

Jackson Chapman also led the team in hitting, going two for three with two RBIs. Cooper Fair­child, William Webb, Parker Henry, and Caden Price each had a hit.

“I was very pleased with our pitching in that game,” coach David Fairchild said. “I think pitching will be the key to our success this season.”

The Lions won the first game in Glen Rose, beating the host team 11-10 last Thursday.

“Cade Neve led the way at the mound with six strikeouts, giving up no hits,” the coach said. “Offensively, Zane Waggoner had a grand slam and produced a total of five RBIs in the game.”

Jackson Chapman was two for three in the game, with Cade Neve, Cooper Fairchild, William Webb, Parker Henry, Luke Ivy, and Cole Chapman each recording singles.

The Lions tied with Wachahatchie 3-3.

“We were leading 3-0 until the final inning,” the coach said. “Then we let them in the game with three runs. Overall, our guys played really well.”

Cade Neve pitched for the Lions, recording eight strikeouts. Cooper Fair­child, Jackson Chapman, Zane Waggoner, and Luke Ivy each had a hit in the game.

The Lions lost to Springtown, 9-3, on Saturday. The coach reported that Jackson Chapman, William Webb, and Caden Price each had hits.

Albany lost the final game to Grandview, 6-3.

Jackson Chapman and Cole Chapman both pitched in the bout. ­Cooper Fairchild and Jackson Chapman were both two for three at the plate, with Cade Neve, Luke Ivy, and Parker Henry each hitting singles.

“Overall, this was a really good tournament for us,” the coach said. “Most of the schools were 4A teams, but we played competitively with them and pitched really well.”

JV Lion Results

The JV opened last Tuesday at home with a 9-0 win over DeLeon.

The JV won both games at the Eula tournament on Saturday.

Albany defeated Eula’s varsity 17-0, then picked up a second win against Ranger’s varsity, 13-4.

“I thought our pitching was on the mark,” Fair­child said. “Cole Read, Tyler Chapman, and Zane Waggoner all threw well for us. We also had some quality innings by Houston Heatly and Lute Wheeler.”

Over the week-long stretch, the coach reported that Taren Farmer, Cason Fairchild, Lute Wheeler Cole Read, Tyler Chapman, and Bryson Herring all had good appearances at the plate.
