Little League games delayed

Albany Little League’s regular season will last just a little longer thanks to a pair of rainy days last week.

Little League president Paul Hamilton said games scheduled for Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 3 will be made up next week. The Oilers and Indians will play Thursday, May 16. A makeup date for the Reds and Eagles had not been determined at press time.

“We’ve been really lucky,” Hamilton said. “Up until last week, we were rocking along pretty good. Even if we couldn’t play now, everybody’s gotten nine games in. You have to have at least eight to be eligible for All-Stars.”

On Tuesday, April 16, about 130 Little Leaguers took part in the third annual field trip to watch Abilene Christian play. Theleaguehas145players this year.

“We had a fun and loud time, a loud bus ride to and from,” Hamilton said. “Debbie (Hamilton) prepared 110 hotdogs and we had a sack lunch for the mall including hot dogs, a drink, and a snack. Everybody had a great time and we got them home a few minutes after 9:00.”

The trip was pushed back a week to avoid conflicts with STAAR testing. Instead of watching the Wildcats take on Texas Tech, the locals watched ACU beat TCU 8-3 on the strength of a seven-run first inning.

“We’re good luck for them,” Hamilton said. “They’ve won two of the three games we’ve gone to. This was our third year, and it’s gotten to be where everybody looks forward to it.”

Hamilton said All-Star selections will be announced after the season. All-Star play begins in June.

Hamilton said some local teams will compete in a district tournament later this month.
