Lions wrap up regular season with 13-3 win

The Albany Lions split a pair of games last week in the final full week of the regular season.

On Tuesday, April 19, the Lions fell 10-4 to third-ranked Anson in a game that decided the top two spots in District 8-2A. Albany bounced back Friday, April 22 with a 14-3 victory in six innings at Cisco.

The Lions wrapped up the regular season Tuesday, April 26 by beating Hawley 13-3 at home. Before the game, the team’s two seniors – Luke Ivy and Cooper Fairchild – were honored with senior night activities.

The bi-district round of the playoffs will be completed by Saturday, May 7. Albany (13-4 overall, 8-2 district) will take on the No. 3 seed out of District 7-2A. Entering Tuesday, possible opponents were Miles, DeLeon, and Winters.

“Once we find out who we get, we’ll start making arrangements,” coach David Fairchild said.

Albany did not seek a playoff warmup game for this week because five players are entered in the Region II-2A track meet.

“We’ll give them a few days off, let them hit a little bit,” the coach said.

Against Anson, Albany fell behind 7-0 as the Tigers got to starter Cooper Fairchild for five runs in the second inning.

“These were much-needed innings for Cooper for down the road in the playoffs,” David Fairchild said. “Tyler Chapman came in and had a good outing, going four innings giving up two hits.”

Anson starting pitcher Nick Miller was perfect through three innings before the Lions got on the board in the fourth with the help of an Anson error. Zane Waggoner had an RBI single and Cole Read drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

Cooper Fairchild went 2 for 3, and Coy Lefevre had a hit.

Against Cisco, the bats came alive as Tyler Chapman and Cooper Fairchild both homered. The Lions had six extra-base hits among 16 total.

“I was very pleased with our at bats,” David Fairchild said. “For the most part, everyone is making contact and getting quality at bats.

Tyler Chapman was 3 for 4 with a double, a homer, and four RBIs, Cooper Fairchild was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Lefevre was 3 for 5. Waggoner and Cason Fairchild each had two hits and an RBI.

“Cooper, Tyler, Cason, and Coy all did a great job of driving the ball to the opposite field,” the coach said. “Both home runs were to right field.”

Albany had to juggle its lineup as starting outfielder Luke Ivy was out to attend the Region II-2A UIL academic meet, and Read was replaced on the mound after taking a line drive off the ankle in the fourth inning. David Fairchild said the move was precautionary.

“He looks good,” the coach said of Read.

Read and Chapman each worked three innings, combining to hold Cisco to one hit.

“Both of them threw well considering the conditions,” David Fairchild said. “Both had control and were in command.”

High winds made things difficult for both teams, but Albany committed just one error while Cisco had four.

“I though Cason Fairchild, Cole Chapman, Coy Lefevre, and Tyler Chapman made all the routine plays,” David Fairchild said. “Adam Hill had a big play in the outfield that saved some runs.”
