Lions win Albany meet as teams prepare for district competition
Albany’s varsity boys topped the Albany-hosted track meet on Thursday, March 26, while the girls also posted strong performances across multiple events.
Official results from the Newcastle meet on Monday, March 30 were not available at press time and will be reported next week.
The Albany varsity boys finished first among teams last Thursday with 135 points, while Eastland placed second with 111. The Albany JV boys earned 110 points to finish second overall behind Eastland’s JV squad.
Boys head track coach Rod Britting said the team’s performance showed continued growth in several event areas.
“Overall, we were pleased with the performances,” Britting said. “We had some great throws in the discus. The guys did exceptionally well. Adrian Wren had a PR by almost 20 feet, and Bennett Neece had good throws as well, along with Ryan Turner.”
Britting also highlighted depth in the field events and progress across the lineup.
“Bennett had a couple of good throws in the shot put, followed up by Zane Green in the triple jump,” he said. “Jakobi Roberson had his best jump of the year and actually a PR, which puts him in a really good spot heading into the region picture. Breylon Billington got back up to form, clearing 12-6 before moving the bar higher to see if we could get another clearance before we ran out of juice.”
He said windy conditions affected times, but the overall trajectory remains positive.
“All the relays were solid,” Britting said. “It was a pretty windy day, so our times weren’t what I would call exceptional. That happens when you’re running in heavy wind, but we’re still making progress. We didn’t really take the day before the meet off; we pressed straight through with a workout, so I know our guys were a little bit flat because of that. Still, we feel good about where we are headed into district with maybe a chance to win it. We’ll be checking all the numbers in different events to see how we fare.”
From Albany girls head track coach Lauren Peacock, the home meet reflected steady improvement and encouraging signs heading into district competition.
“Overall, the girls competed well and we had some PRs set,” Peacock said. “Our throwers are really coming on right now, and it’s good to see them having success. Our relay times are also coming together pretty solid the week before district.”
