Lions take third, Lady Lions earn top finishes at Buffalo Relays

By Sam Waller

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track teams made their second outing of the season Thursday, March 6 at the Buffalo Relays at Cross Plains.

The teams will compete Saturday, March 15 at the Buckaroo Relays at Breckenridge.

At Cross Plains, the varsity boys placed third in the team standings with 85 points.

“We saw times come down with almost everybody that ran,” Lions coach Rod Britting said. “There were a few that were higher, but it was a windier meet.”

Britting said windy conditions also hampered field events.

“We weren’t very successful in the pole vault with a crosswind, and we just enough to win it and quit so we didn’t get anybody hurt,” he said. “In discus, we threw with the wind, which kept knocking it down.”

That didn’t keep the Lions from having success in those events. Breylon Billington won the pole vault and Adrian Wren was second in the discus. Max Oliver was third in the shot put.

On the track, Jayce Tinkle and Wesley Gleitz went 1-2 in the 400. Huffman Heatly was third in the 800.

Albany lowered its times in all three relays despite some lineup changes. The Lions were second in the 1600 relay and fourth in the 400 relay and 800 relay.

“We threw a skeleton crew together in the sprint relay because baseball ran a little long, and some of our guys got there at the last second,” Britting said. “The mile relay had a good time, knocked off nearly three seconds. Chip Chambers ran for the first time, so it’s good to see three of the guys coming back basically ahead of where they were last year.”

Albany has two more meets after this week, including the Roaring Lions Relays on Thursday, March 27, before the District 10-2A meet on Wednesday, April 2 at Cisco.

The Lady Lions again got production out of their three varsity athletes, scoring 28 points to place eighth in the team standings.

Ashlyn Miller won the 400 and was third in the high jump. Zayne Lefevre was third in the 200. Avery Everitt was fifth in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles.

In the JV boys division, Albany was seventh with 28 points. Braxton Henry won the pole vault. Bennett Neece was second in the shot put in addition to placing in the discus and running a relay leg. Cash Edgar was third in the discus.

The JV Lions were third in the 400 relay and fourth in the 800 relay.
