Lions take sole possession of first place

By Donnie A. Lucas

The Lion baseball team stayed in sole possession of first place in District 8-2A thanks to three wins over the last week, in addition to the news that Stamford defeated Anson this week to give the Tigers a second loss.

Albany (13-3-1, 7-0) is still going into what previously had was thought to be an unofficial district championship game in Anson on Friday, but even a win by the Tigers would not knock the Lions out of first place.

“We would have to lose two of our last three games to go to a tie for first,” coach David Fairchild said.

The Lions, now No. 6 in the state rankings, defeated No. 5 Anson in the first round, 7-5.

The game in Anson Friday is set for 5:00 p.m. Albany will host Cisco next Tuesday, April 20 as the district race winds down.

The final regular season game is set for April 27 in Hawley.

The Lions opened last week with an 11-1 win over Hawley to end the first round of district.

“Coy Lefevre and Caden Price had a good at bats, both going two for three,” Fairchild said.

Cole Chapman got the win, pitching four innings and allowing one run on three hits and two walks. He struck out two.

The Lions had a big night against Stamford last Friday, winning 21-4.

“It was a huge night for us offensively,” the coach said. We had several players with multiple hits. Anytime you collect 18 hits in a game, your offense is doing their job.”

Cade Neve was the winning pitcher, going four innings and allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out nine at the plate.

“Cade was spot on from the mound,” he said. “And we had two freshmen – Cole Read and Zane Waggoner – who got two hits each to go two for two for a combined five RBIs.”
