Lions to start district action Friday

The Lion basketball team dropped a non-district game in Graford last Friday, 66-57, but got back into the winning column on Tuesday hosting Archer City.

The Lions handed the visiting Wildcats a 67-57 loss in their final non-district tune-up game.

Both the varsity and JV will host the Roscoe Plowboys on Friday to start District 8-2A action. The JV boys will follow the JV girls at about 5:15 p.m., while the varsity will take the floor after the varsity girls at about 7:30 p.m.

The Lions will host the Hawley Bearcats on Tuesday, Jan. 15 with the same schedule.

The varsity fell to 4-2 for the season with the loss to Graford.

“The guys did a fantastic job on both ends,” head boys coach Ryder Peacock said. “We stepped up our defense, and even though we didn’t create a lot of steals, we forced them into difficult shots and created some unforced turnovers.”

The coach named Ryan Hill and Ben West as offensive standouts, while Cameron Dacus was picked for defense.

“Ryan and Ben did a good job of attacking the basket,” the coach said. “Ben also hit a few outside shots to give us the ability to work inside.”

The Lions shot 50 percent from the free throw line.

The JV also lost in Graford last Friday, 59-23.

“We played a really good team without several of our starters who were out of town for the Christmas break,” coach Rod Britting said. “We did have the chance to play some kids and evaluate how they respond in a game scenario.”

The coach said that he has over 20 players on the JV roster and will try to divide the group to play separate games as much as possible.

“We have a lot of players, so we are working to find some opportunities for the guys to play to see who steps up and improves,” he said.
