Lions stalled at 7-0

The Lion baseball team was off to a strong start with a pair of wins during the first day of the Brock tournament, only to have the rest of the three-day event canceled due to rain and possible concerns over the coronavirus.
Starting the season with a 7-0 record, the Lions and all other high school teams across the state are in a two-week deferral due to the virus. The University Interscholastic League, which controls all athletic and academic contests, has suspended all practices and games until March 30.
The Albany schools have closed until April 1, meaning that the first time the Lions could possibly return to action will be Friday, April 3 with the Stamford Bulldogs coming to play a District 8-2A matchup.
Any further closures could affect the schedule.
The Lions picked up a 5-1 win over Grandview in the first round of the Brock tournament on March 12.
“I felt like we got two quality wins at the tournament,” coach David Fair-child said. “In the Grandview game, I was really pleased with both Cade Neve and Jackson Chapman on the mound.”
Neve pitched three and a third innings, allowing one run on one hit and two walks. He had five strikeouts.
Chapman came in for the rest of the game, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk. He pitched two strikeouts.
“B.J. Morris made some good plays out in center field, covering ground and tracking down balls,” the coach said.
The Lions defeated Covenant Christian School, 3-2, thanks to a walk-off single by Luke Ivy that scored the winning run.
“Ben West went five inn-ings for us on the mound, striking out five batters,” Fairchild said. “Cole Chapman came in to pitch the sixth, and Brodey Jones came in for the seventh and got the win.”
West pitched five full frames, giving up one run on one hit and three walks. Chapman threw for three outs, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.
Jones closed with no hits or runs and two strikeouts.
