Lions score district wins
By Sam Waller
The Albany Lions baseball team started fast in their lone outing last week to defeat Hawley 18-7 in five innings.
The Lions scored 11 runs in the first inning on Wednesday, April 6, sending 15 batters to the plate. The game, which wrapped up the first half of the District 8-2A schedule, was delayed a day because of wet grounds at Hawley following rain early in the week.
“We hit the ball well, had a good pitching performance, and took care of business,” coach David Fairchild said. “It was a good win.”
After taking Friday off for the District 10-2A track meet, Albany (10-3 overall, 5-1 district) started the second half of league play with a 8-2 win over Stamford on Tuesday, April 12. Details will be reported next week.
The Lions visit Haskell at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 15, then host Anson at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19.
“This is going to be a big week,” Fairchild said. “We’ve kind of separated ourselves from the district a little bit. If we keep winning, that’ll put us in good shape.”
At Hawley, Cole Chapman and Cason Fairchild each drove in three runs as the Lions scored in double figures for the fourth time in five district games. Cooper Fairchild went 3 for 5 with a double, and Chapman was 3 for 4 with two doubles as Albany banged out 11 hits. The Lions also drew 11 walks, three by Zane Waggoner, and nine Bearcat errors.
Chapman also pitched four innings to get the win, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out five. Caden Price pitched the fifth inning, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two.
Albany’s first five batters reached and scored. Price doubled in two runs and scored on Cason Fairchild’s sacrifice fly. The Lions led 13-0 in the third before Hawley got on the board and added five runs in the fourth to go up 18-3.
“We did a good job of putting the ball in play and making Hawley make play,” David Fairchild said.
Coy Lefevre, Luke Ivy, and Tyler Chapman also drove in runs in the game, and Cole Read had a hit. All nine spots in the batting order scored runs.
