The Albany Lions kept pace in the District 8-2A baseball race on April 4 with a 4-0 win at Cisco in the final game of the first half of district play.

The Lions (13-2 overall, 5-1 district) were in a three way tie for the district lead when they visited Hawley on Tuesday to start the second half, but a 9-0 win there puts Albany all alone in first place. Details will be reported next week.

Albany continues a five-game road stretch at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 14 at Anson.

Game Details

At Cisco, Cole Read pitched a three-hit shutout and drove in two runs to lead the Lions.

“I’m very proud of the command Cole had,” Lions coach David Fairchild said. “I felt Brody Oliver did a good job catching him.”

Read struck out eight and walked one in giving the Lions another solid pitching performance. In the first round of district, Albany held opponents to five runs – all unearned – on 10 hits over 30 innings with an opponents batting average of .101. The run included no-hitters by Cole Chapman and Tyler Chapman.

Read stayed out of trouble for the most part, ending the second with a strikeout after the Loboes loaded the bases with two outs. In the sixth, Cisco used two singles and a bunt to put runners at second and third with two outs, but another strikeout ended the threat.

Offensively, Albany scored all its runs with two outs, making the most of six hits by stealing seven bases.

Zane Waggoner, who went 2 for 3 with a double, singled in the only run Albany needed in the first. Keatin Russell scored on a double steal in the second.

Read, who went 2 for 4, had RBI singles in the third and seventh.

Caden Price and Oliver each had a hit.

Junior Varsity

The JV Lions defeated Cisco 10-1 in four innings  following the varsity game.

Oliver pitched the first two innings. Calhan Fairchild recorded four outs and Mason McCloy finished up.

Will LeMay, Woods Peterson, Jake Hale, and Calhan Fairchild each had hits.

“Defensively, McCloy played well, being involved in two double plays,” David Fairchild said. “Shawn Keen did a good job behind the plate, throwing out a baserunner. Peterson made some nice plays in the outfield.”
