Lions kick off fall practices ahead of 2025 season
Cool morning temperatures gave Albany football players a welcome surprise as the first official week of practice got underway. Head Coach Denney Faith said the early conditions allowed for crisp, focused workouts to start the season.
“It’s been really cooperative weather-wise,” Faith said. “We’ve had a good start.”
The Lions opened the week under UIL acclimation rules, beginning with two days in shorts before adding shoulder pads on Wednesday. Full-contact practice was expected to begin Friday.
A total of 44 players reported for practice—slightly fewer than expected—but Faith said the number still gives the team depth across the roster.
Faith said the summer training program continues to help prepare players ahead of the fall. “It puts us in a better position heading into August,” he said.
Albany will face a challenging slate of opponents before district play begins. The team’s first two scrimmages are on the road against Coleman and Early, followed by a tough home opener against Stamford. Pre-district matchups will include Anson, Hawley, Seymour, and Coahoma.
“Stamford is always good, and Anson and Hawley are going to be very strong this year,” Faith said. “Seymour might be a little down, but it’s still a tough stretch that will test us early.”
Coahoma, now scheduled as the homecoming opponent, was a late addition after Merkel dropped the originally planned game. Faith said the adjustment worked out well, as Coahoma had an open date and presents another quality opponent.
