Lions hold 2-2 mark midway through district play

By Melinda L. Lucas

The Albany Lions had a win-loss split last week as they work through the first half of the district baseball schedule.

They were on the road Tuesday night, facing Hawley, but will be back in town on Friday, April 4 to host Haskell for a 5:00 p.m. start. Next Tuesday, April 8, the Lions will end the first half with a home game against Anson.

As of Tuesday’s press deadline, the Lions hold a 4-3-3 overall record and are 2-2 in district.

Against a senior-loaded Stamford team on March 25, the Lions had only two hits. The Bulldogs outpaced them with six hits, ending with a 2-14 loss for Albany.

Wesley Gleitz and Brody Oliver each recorded a hit for the Lions.

“The difference in the game was that we had 10 errors and 12 walks from the mound,” coach David Fairchild said. “It’s tough to win with stats like that.”

In the 12-0 win over Abilene TCLA last Friday, Oliver got the win with nine strikeouts, giving up one hit.

Calhan Fairchild hit two singles. Oliver had a triple, and Aiden Vickers and Chip Chambers each had a hit during the evening.

“We’re going to have to eliminate the big innings and make routine plays in order to get to the playoffs,” said coach Fairchild.
