Lions to face McCamey for area title

The Lion baseball team dominated Cross Plains in the bi-district series last week, handing the Buffaloes a pair of 10-run rule losses to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

Albany (15-6) will travel to San Angelo Central High School this week for the area playoff series against the McCamey Badgers.

As of press time, Game 1 will be played Thursday at 5:00 p.m., with the second bout set to follow after a brief rest. If a third game is needed to determine the series, it will be played at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10.

Tickets at the game have been set at $3 for adults and $2 for students.

The stadium is located adjacent to the San Angelo ISD football stadium at Knickerbocker Road and Johnson Street in San Angelo.

McCamey, the winner of District 5-2A, received a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Bi-District Details

The Lions’ first game against Cross Plains was moved from Eastland to Abilene Christian University last Thursday due to rain, but then had to be moved to Hermleigh due to heavy rain in Abilene at game time.

Despite the weather delays, Albany handed the Buffs a 13-3 loss in five innings.

The Buffaloes scored a run in the first inning, but Albany answered in the second and never looked back, adding three more in both the second and third frames before unleashing their offensive firepower with five runs in the fourth.

Ben West pitched all but the final out of the five-inning game, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out eight at the plate.

Joshua Dyer came in for the final out of the game.

“Ben had a good outing on the mound, with Josh coming in to close the game,” coach David Fairchild said.

The Lions collected 11 hits for 13 runs.

“Overall, it was a good day for the Lions,” the coach said. “It was a good win under some trying conditions.”

Albany played Cross Plains at ACU for the second game on Friday, earning a 15-1 win that was capped by eight runs in the sixth.

“Cade Neve had a great day on the mound for us, allowing just two hits and striking out nine,” Fair-child said. “Josh came in to close that game, getting the final two outs.”

Neve allowed only one run and one walk, while Dyer closed with two strikeouts.

“Our pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and only two walks in the series,” the coach said. “Those were pretty impressive stats.”

The coach was also pleased with the offense.

“We had another big day at the plate, collecting 18 hits in the game,” he said. “We really hit well in the series up and down the line-up, but the pitching was still the key to the game.”
