The Lion baseball team ended the regular season with a perfect 10-0 district sweep after a win over Hawley on Tuesday, clinching the undisputed District 8-2A championship title and advancing into the playoffs.

The Lions face the fourth place team from District 7-2A in bi-district action at the end of next week. The opponent and game details for the first round had not been determined at press time.

Albany closed the regular season with a 7-2 win in Hawley on Tuesday. Details will be reported next week.

Coach David Fairchild announced that his team will play a practice game against Windthorst, the winner of District 9-2A, on Friday in Graham. The first pitch is set for 5:00 p.m., with the Lions serving as the home team.

The Lions picked up a second win over Anson, 12-2, on April 21 to clinch the district title.

Albany scored three runs in the second inning, another in the third, and four each in the fourth and fifth innings to invoke the 10-run rule after the fifth.

“It was a great win for the guys,” coach David Fairchild said. “It was a good way to wrap up the district title.”

The coach commended Cade Neve on the mound. The senior threw three and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out nine batters at the plate. Jackson Chapman came in as relief for the last four outs, striking out two and walking one. He gave up one hit, but no runs.

Fundraiser Set

The team will host the annual fundraiser on Thursday (today) starting at 6:00 p.m. at the high school ballpark.

Players have been securing pledges for the traditional long-ball contest, and meal deals will be available at the concession stand.

The public is invited to attend.
