Lions compete at PK Relays, Stewart sets 800 school record

Senior Chance Stewart set a new school record in the 800-meter run to highlight Albany’s performance at the PK Relays in Graham on Saturday, March 21.

Stewart posted a time of 1:59.7 to win first place, breaking the previous school record of 2:01.16 set by Andres Salazar, a 2008 state meet qualifier.

Albany will host a high school meet all day Thursday, March 26 and a junior high meet on Friday, March 27.

The high school athletes will travel to Newcastle on March 30 for the final pre-district meet before going to the district competition in Cisco on April 9.

Albany competed in a split meet format at Graham, with athletes entered in either small school or big school divisions. It was basically the equivalent of JV and varsity categories, explained boys coach Rod Britting.

Britting said his athletes used the meet to continue building toward district competition despite a limited roster.

“We had a few guys missing this meet, so we mixed and matched a few events,” Britting said. “Our main goal was to get some good running in, and all of our times were decent. We’re still just trying to get ourselves ready for the district meet in two weeks.”

Britting highlighted several individual performances, including Jakobi Roberson in the triple jump, Blake Britting in the high jump, and Braxton Henry and Levi Murphy in the pole vault. He also noted a strong showing by Adrian Wren in the discus. Albany did not compete in the mile relay.

On the girls side, coach Lauren Peacock said participation was also affected by absences, but the athletes who competed made the most of the opportunity.

“Coach Johnston took some of our throwers to the Clyde meet on Thursday since some of them didn’t get to throw at Santo the week before,” Peacock said. “We had several still out of town, so we didn’t get any relays going, but I’m proud of those who showed up on their Spring Break Saturday to compete and get better.”

Peacock said the team is focused on evaluating performances as district approaches.

“District is sneaking up on us,” she said. “We have our local meet this week, then we go to Newcastle for one last tune-up before district. We’re looking to see where we’re at in times and events so we can figure out where we’ll have the most success at the district meet.”
