The Albany Lady Lions had their way against a pair of Class 1A opponents last week in District 2-6A volleyball action last week, sweeping both matches in three sets.

On Aug. 31, Albany defeated Woodson on the road, winning 25-6, 25-8, 25-10.

On Saturday at home, the Lady Lions dispatched Abilene Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLC) 25-3, 25-4, 25-5.

Albany was scheduled to play at Moran on Tuesday in another match against a 1A opponent. The Lady Lions won in three sets 25-12, 25-8, 25-12 to improve to 17-3 on the season. Details will be reported next week.

Albany is scheduled to close out this week at 10:00 a.m. Saturday against Newcastle. The varsity will be the only team on the AHS court, with both junior varsities playing out of town.

In the Oct. 31 Woodson match, the Lady Lions served up 24 aces. Albany recorded 36 aces against TLC in last Saturday’s match.

Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said the challenge for her team is to get enough floor time with such quick matches.

“We’ve tried to do a lot of conditioning in practice to try to keep our endurance up because we’ve only been playing matches that are going three sets.,” Reneau said. “We try to set goals and really focus on position and transition.”

The positive side, Reneau said, is that the Lady Lions were able to maintain a high level of play in both of last week’s matches.

“We didn’t have any sets that were up-and-down,” she said. “We stayed levelheaded. All of the scores were about the same.”

JV Results

The Lady Lions JV1 team split its two matches last week, while the JV2 team lost its only outing in three sets.

The JV1 team finished the week with a 7-2 overall record, while JV 1 ends the week 2-5.

On Aug. 31, the teams went in different directions for road matches.

JV1 traveled to Comanche and suffered a 25-15, 23-25, 24-26 loss to the Maidens.

“The girls came out on fire, but lost some focus and couldn’t finish,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “Our back row had some great passes to target. Overall, it wasn’t a bad game, but we need to learn to finish.”

Meanwhile, the JV2 team dropped a 18-15, 25-21, 21-25 decision at Woodson.

“The girls served and passed very well,” Wilson said. “After losing the first set, they battled back and almost won in three sets. I was proud of their focus during the game.”

On Saturday, JV1 defeated TLC 25-4, 25-6.

“The JV1 did not play down to their competition; they did a fantastic job,” Wilson said. “They showed no mercy and did a great job working as a team to win big.”

On Tuesday, both JV teams played home matches against Knox City. On Saturday, both squads will participate in the Clyde JV tournament.
