The Lady Lion basketball team finished the first round of district play with a 3-2 record, splitting games last week with Hawley and Haskell.

Albany started the second half of district on Tuesday, hosting the Cross Plains Lady Buffaloes. The Lady Lions won the bout 50-31 to improve their record to 4-2.

Details were not available at press time, but will be reported next week.

The team will be on the road on Friday in Stamford with games scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. for the JV girls and 6:30 p.m. for the varsity. The JV team was unable to put a team on the court last week due to illnesses.

The action will return home next Tuesday, Feb. 4 with Albany hosting Roscoe.

Albany traveled to Hawley on Jan. 21, earning a 40-27 win on the road.

“The girls did a good job of buckling down and taking care of business,” coach Tate Thompson said. “Hawley has a deceptive team that is well coached and plays great defense.”

Alli Hill was named the offensive standout by the coach, along with Torie Fuentes on defense.

Albany 7 14 12 7 - 40

Hawley 6 8 7 6 - 27

Scoring for Albany were Fuentes 4, Brylee Moore 5, Cydney Nelson 3, Hill 10, Tana Thompson 2, Jaleigh Morales 10, and Sarah Cotter 6.

The Lady Lions fell to the district-leading Haskell Maidens last Friday, 53-32.

“We really struggled against Haskell’s press,” the coach said. “We came out and played a great first quarter and were actually up by one point. Then we struggled in the second quarter, with them scoring 20 points on us to make the difference in the game.”

Morales was the offensive standout and Fuentes was again named for defense.

Albany 10 0 6 16 - 32

Haskell 9 20 14 10 - 53

Scoring for the Lady Lions were Fuentes 10, Moore 2, Nelson 2, Thompson 2, Carley Green 1, Morales 15, and Cotter 2.
