Lady Lions shut down Stamford
The Albany Lady Lions traveled to Haskell on Tuesday, Jan. 6, for district basketball action.
The girls lost 21-52, with full results to be reported next week.
The Lady Lions secured their first district win of the season last Friday, Jan. 2, defeating Stamford with a strong defensive performance that head coach Ashlyn Bevel said set the tone for the night.
“Defense was what won that game,” Bevel said. “We knew going into it that we had to play tough defense to top off the win and that’s what we did. We held their best player to three points.”
The Lady Lions also turned in key efforts on the boards, led by Keeley Britting, who recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Zayne Lefevre and Tinley Hefner were also major contributors, Bevel said, helping lead Albany in both scoring and rebounding. Hefner finished with eight points, while Lefevre added seven. Together, the pair combined for 12 rebounds.
“Overall it was a great and hard-fought win,” Bevel said. “I was very proud of the way we competed.”
Earlier in the week, the Lady Lions competed in a tournament at Windthorst, dropping games on Monday to Poolville and Vernon and returning Tuesday for losses to Bellevue and Windthorst.
Albany will be at home Friday, Jan. 9, to host Abilene TLCA. The JV girls will tip off at 4 p.m., followed by the JV boys, with the varsity girls scheduled to play at approximately 6:15 p.m. The Lady Lions will then travel to Cisco on Tuesday, Jan. 13, for another round of district play, with the JV beginning at 4 p.m. and varsity following at about 6:15 p.m.
JV Action
The Albany JV girls earned a come-from-behind 30-27 victory over Stamford on Friday, Jan. 2. Stamford led 10-8 after the first quarter, 21-14 at halftime, and 26-22 heading into the fourth before Albany surged ahead in the final period.
Scoring for Albany included Sawyer Shoaf with 16 points, Kenzee Roysdon with 6, Hailey Gleitz with 4, and Kynlee Milligan and Haiden Niell with 2 points each.
JV coach Lauren Peacock credited the team’s defensive adjustment at halftime, noting that Avery Gleitz was assigned to face guard Stamford’s leading scorer, who had 12 first-half points and was held to just two in the final two quarters.
“After trailing the entire game, I’m proud of the girls’ mindset and determination,” Peacock said. “They fought until the end, and it paid off as we outscored them 16-6 in the second half.”
