The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team enjoyed a productive week, opening District 6-2A play with a victory and reaching the Silver Bracket final at the Buckle Up For Lane’s Sake Tournament in Nocona.

The Lady Lions played  their second district match Tuesday at Woodson winning in three sets 25-6, 25-8,25-10. Details will be reported next week.

Following Tuesday’s match at Woodson, the Lady Lions will host Abilene TLC on Saturday.

Albany began the week at 14-3 overall and 1-0 in district.

The Lady Lions defeated Ranger Aug. 24 in the district opener 25-15, 25-7, 25-6.

“It was really important that we got district off to a positive start and a strong start,” Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said. “Our goal is to win district and go 4-0 against Ranger and Hawley.”

Reneau felt that the Ranger win was a good start.

“I thought the girls were focused and excited to be there,” she said. “Everyone contributed to that win.”

Nocona Tournament

Albany faced a busy weekend at the Nocona tournament, playing four matches each on Thursday and Saturday.

In Thursday’s pool play, the Lady Lions opened with a 25-9, 25-20 victory over Whitewright before suffering their first loss of the season to Henrietta 26-24, 17-25, 19-25. Albany then beat Burkburnett 25-20, 25-22 and lost to Celina 13-25, 12-25.

“I wanted to see teams we don’t normally play, and I wanted to compete against higher divisions,” Reneau said. “That’s exactly what we got.”

The local girls were in a “heavy pool,” with Celina and Henrietta ending up competing for first in the Gold Bracket and Albany and Burkburnett playing for first in the Silver Bracket.

In Saturday’s bracket play, Albany opened with a 25-8, 22-25, 25-3 victory against the Graham JV, then beat Bryson 25-7, 25-20 in the quarterfinals, Lindsay 15-25, 17-25 in the semifinals and lost to Burkburnett 23-25, 14-25 in the final.

“We left Albany at 5:00 a.m., and the girls were exhausted,” Reneau said. “I was proud of them for pushing through. I felt we ran out of gas that last match against Burkburnett.”

Albany had beat Burkburnett in pool play, but had one more match than their opponents on Saturday.

“I felt like that made a little bit of difference,” said the coach.

Reneau said the tournament, which consisted mainly of Class 3A and 4A teams, helped the Lady Lions make significant progress.

“I think it made us step up and challenged us in ways we need to be challenged, especially looking forward to playoffs and things like that,” she said. “We are still adding games, trying to get some bigger games in there – Snyder is on our schedule – and we’ll continue to do that.”

Reneau feels that the tournament was a window into what the playoffs will look like.

“It was fun to see the girls compete and win against bigger divisions and not lay down because they were tired or because we were a smaller school,” said the coach. “They really fought.”

Junior Varsity

Albany played just one JV match for the week with the JV1 team defeating Ranger 25-5, 25-11.

“We saw some great things in the district opener for the JV1,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “They did a great job of talking and keeping the energy up even though it was a slow game. We played and won as a team.”

The JV1 team was scheduled to play Tuesday at Comanche while the rest of the Albany teams from seventh grade through varsity visited Woodson.
