Lady Lions open district at Ranger

The Lady Lion volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season last week against Jim Ned but got right back in the win column on Saturday in Eastland.

Albany opened District 6-2A action on Tuesday in Ranger, picking up a 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 win on the road, improving to 5-1 for the season. Details will be reported next week.

Albany scheduled an extra non-district game on Friday against Colorado City starting at 4:00 p.m. with the varsity. The JV I game will follow at 5:30 p.m.

The varsity will travel to Strawn on Saturday for a district game at 10:00 a.m. There will not be any JV games in Strawn.

Albany will be back at home next Tuesday, Sept. 1 with the Woodson Cowgirls coming to play beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the JV and 6:30 p.m. for the varsity.

The Lady Lions fell to the visiting Jim Ned girls 18-25, 30-32, 14-25 on Aug. 18.

“That match was a fun one to watch and play,” coach M.J. Reneau. “Jim Ned challenged us and made us better. I was really proud of the way the girls fought back in the second set.”

The team recorded 38 digs against Jim Ned’s offense.

“They were very tall, so we had to make some adjustments to try to stop them at the net,” she said. “Alli Hill recorded four blocks at key times to give us momentum, but we just came up short on the score.”

The Lady Lions traveled to Eastland last Saturday, bringing home a 25-22, 25-13, 25-16 victory.

“The girls played a great match in Eastland,” the coach said. “Our serving kept Eastland out of system, and we adjusted well to their tips and were able to record a total of 33 kills.”

She noted that the team played all 3A schools in the preseason and came out with a 4-1 record.

JV Results

The JV I girls also split games last week, losing to Jim Ned 12-25, 23-25 on Aug. 18.

“We lost to a very talented team,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “We fought hard in the second set and almost forced a third. I was really proud of how the girls fought back.”

The JV I improved to 4-1 with a best-of-three set win in Eastland, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23.

“We held off Eastland with great hustle and great communication,” the coach said. “There were some great digs by Robin Lucas on the back row that saved us in some great rallies.”

The JV II lost to Jim Ned 14-25, 7-25.

“We had some good hits and saw some things we need to work on,” the coach said.

Albany also lost to Eastland 26-28, 22-25.

“We saw some great transitions and hits from the front row for some great hustle throughout the game,” Wilson said. “We just were edged out of a tough match.”
