Lady Lions hit the court Friday to begin '25 season

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team is ready to take the court for the 2025 season, with practice beginning tomorrow, Friday, August 1. Head coach MJ Reneau said she expects around 20 girls in the program this fall, with both varsity and junior varsity teams in place. In addition to the first practice, the team will volunteer at Closet Angels Friday afternoon.

“Two seniors are returning with varsity experience,” Reneau said, “but many of our girls saw time last year, so the chemistry should come together quickly.” Last season, the Lady Lions advanced to the area round of the playoffs before falling to Windthorst, who went on to compete in the state tournament.

Reneau noted the team will open their season with a series of scrimmages, starting with a home matchup against Benjamin and Breckenridge on Friday, August 8 at 11:00 a.m. Another scrimmage will follow on Saturday, August 9 at 10:00 a.m. against Woodson in Albany.

The regular season officially begins Tuesday, August 12 with a home match against Aspermont and Merkel starting at 11:00 a.m. Albany will then host Breckenridge on Saturday, August 16 at 10:00 a.m. before hitting the road to face Eastland on Tuesday, August 19.

While an early-season tournament originally scheduled in Breckenridge was canceled, Reneau plans to use the open date to give younger players game experience by scrimmaging against Breckenridge JV squads. “It’ll be a good chance to get our sophomores and freshmen out on the court,” she said.
