The Lady Lion volleyball team picked up a pair of district wins last week but fell short again against the Lady Bearcats on Tuesday in Hawley.

Albany, now 7-2 in district, suffered a five-set match loss to Hawley 21-25, 25-22, 28-26, 18-25, 12-15, still holding firm to the second place position in District 6-2A.

The Lady Lions are open this weekend and have only three regular season games remaining. The team will travel to Moran next Tuesday, Oct. 22 for a 7:00 p.m. match, and will play in Woodson on Oct. 26 before returning home to host Ranger on Oct. 29.

Since Albany is one of just two Class 2A teams in the mixed district, both Hawley and Albany are assured playoff spots. The other five teams in District 6-2A will compete for three spots in the Class 1A playoff bracket.

Details of the game in Hawley on Tuesday were not available at press time but will be reported next week.

“We made a few errors against Strawn,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “We had some slow starts to our sets, but we finished all of them on top. Our serve receive and hitting were two areas that we performed really well in.”

Albany hosted Newcastle on Saturday, winning in four sets 21-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-22.

“We had trouble getting any momentum during the first set, but the girls were able to bounce back and finish the last three sets very strong,” Reneau said.

The Saturday game was the local girls’ annual “Pink Out Game,” and the $226 raised in the concession stand that day will be donated to Tom Belcher, father of varsity player Blanton Belcher.

JV Results

The JV Red team picked up a pair of victories last week as well.

Albany’s JV Red team went to Strawn on Oct. 8, bringing back a 25-20, 25-18 victory.

“The team did a great job of working together for the win,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “There were a lot of aces spread out among several of the girls, and our front row was able to score on a number of kills.”

The girls hosted Newcastle on Oct. 12, improving to 4-0 in district and 15-6 overall, with a 25-12, 25-5 victory.

“Because some of the team was gone on Saturday, the girls did a great job adjusting to different rotations,” the coach said. “We had a lot of kills and moved well to come up with several good digs.”

The coach also credited the serving game.

“I was so glad that the girls didn’t lose focus when they got ahead,” said Wilson.
