Lady Lions fall in district play

By Donnie A. Lucas

Albany’s varsity Lady Lions opened District 10-2A action on Dec. 21 with a loss in Stamford, followed by dropping a non-district game in Aspermont last Saturday, Dec. 28.

The girls hosted the Haskell Maidens on Tuesday, Dec. 31, but results were not available due to an early deadline for the News.

The district race will continue with a road game on Friday against Abilene TLCA. The girls will follow the JV boys at approximately 6:15 p.m. Albany will host Cisco on Jan. 7.

The Lady Lions lost to Stamford 63-26 after a very slow start, trailing 23-7 after the first period and 42-10 at the half. Albany came back to take the third quarter 10-4, but fell 14-6 in the final period.

“We again had a slow start,” coach Ashlyn Bevel said. “We played a much better second half, but we already were down too far.”

Scoring for Albany were Caroline Holson 15, Ashlyn Miller 4, Tatum Grady 3, and Madi Parrott and Charlee Hefner with two points each.

Albany made the trip to Aspermont on Dec. 28, losing 55-18 to the Lady Hornets. However, the coach said that her girls played well in the second half.

“We improved in the second half, allowing just 10 points total,” she said.

Caroline Holson again was the top scorer with six points, followed by Charlee Hefner with five and Charley Flowers, Tatum Grady and Ashlyn Miller with two each. Charli Trail scored one point.

The Lady Lions are now 0-2 in district and 3-13 overall for the season.
