Lady Lions face tough test, rebound with big home win
By Melinda L. Lucas
Last week’s softball games against district opponents ended up about as coach Jimmy Fuentes expected, with an 0-18 loss to district leader Stamford and a 11-0 win over Abilene TLCA.
Albany hosted both games – Stamford on Tuesday, March 25 and TLCA on Friday. The Friday evening game signaled the start of the second half of district play.
The Lady Lions traveled to Hawley on Tuesday, April 1 and are scheduled to play Haskell here at their home field on Friday, April 4, starting at 5:00 p.m. The AHS girls will host Anson next Tuesday, April 8, also with a 5:00 p.m. start time.
“Last week was definitely a week of two opposites,” Fuentes said. “Stamford is undeniably the best team in the district, and with our situation, we had a hard time even putting the ball in play.”
On the other side of the coin, Fuentes pointed out that TLCA is still in the developmental stage of trying to build a program.
At press time before playing Tuesday’s game, the Lady Lions held a 7-4 overall record and were 2-3 in district standings.
They are currently in fifth place among the six district teams, which include Stamford, Anson, Haskell, and Hawley.
