The Lady Lion volleyball team picked up three more wins last week, including opening the district race in Ranger.

Albany hosted Woodson on Tuesday, earning a 25-9, 25-7, 25-13 win to go to 8-1 for the season.

While several 1A schools are grouped into District 6-2A, Albany will play only Ranger and Hawley for district positions in the 2A bracket of district.

“We aren’t counting the 1A schools as district games this season since they have their own bracket in the playoffs,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “That will allow us to make up games at the end of the season if needed due to the coronavirus.”

On Saturday, Albany hosts Abilene TLC at 10:00 a.m. No JV games are scheduled against TLC.

The Lady will also host Moran on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the main gym. Both JV teams will travel to Hawley for games that night.

Game Details

The varsity girls beat Ranger in three sets to open district on Aug. 25 in Ranger, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14.

“We had more errors than normal, but we were still able to win in three sets,” head coach M.J. Reneau said.  “We recorded 31 kills and 20 digs in the game, with Torie Fuentes leading us with six digs, and Clara Holson providing 27 assists. This was a great way to start district.”

Albany took time off from district to host Colorado City on Friday, defeating the Lady Wolves 25-12, 25-22, 25-10.

“I thought our transitions looked really good in this game,” Reneau said. “A month into volleyball and we know where to be on the court at all times. We took advantage of free balls that Colorado City gave us and turned them into points.”

She added that the team is attacking from both the front row and back row now.

JV Results

Both the JV I and JV II teams played in Ranger last week, winning both matches.

The JV I earned a 25-21, 25-12 victory in Ranger.

“The JV I did a great job finishing the game,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “It wasn’t our best effort, but the girls banded together and pulled out the win.”

The JV II also earned a victory, 25-9, 25-12.

“The JV II did a great job serving against Ranger to get the win,” she said. “There was a lot of scrappiness that helped us come together and make some great plays.”

The JV I also defeated Colorado City last Friday, 25-17, 25-19.

“The girls did a fantastic job against Colorado City,” Wilson said. “They did a great job passing the ball and getting some great kills.”

The JV I improved to 6-1 for the season, while the JV II is 3-3.
