Lady Lions defeat Sweetwater JV

Albany’s Lady Lions defeated Sweetwater JV 10-1 on Tuesday, Feb. 27 in the softball team’s last outing until late March.

Insufficient numbers have forced Albany (6-1) to cancel games until March 29 at Abilene TLCA.Thatwillstartthe secondhalfoftheDistrict 8-2A schedule.

The next home game is Tuesday, April 2 against Cross Plains.

Because Albany and Cisco are the only Class 2A programs in the district, the Lady Lions are still eligible for the playoffs if they can finish the season.

Against Sweetwater, CarisaBarerrapitcheda complete game, striking out eight while allowing a run on six hits. The junior did not issue a walk and retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced.

After scoring a run in the first inning, Albany pushed its lead to 5-0 in the second. The Lady Lions added three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Charlee Hefner homered twice and drove in six runs in going 2 for 4. She hit a grand slam in the second to break the game open and added a two-run blast in the seventh.

Robin Lucas, who had two RBIs, and Barerra, who doubled, both went 2 for 5. Jayden Kelly and J’Cee Keen were both 2 for 4, while Madi Parrott, Gabby Lopez, and Solei Henry each had one hit.
