Lady Lions continue district push this week

The Albany Lady Lions split district games last week, losing to Haskell and defeating TLCA.

They lost to Cisco on Tuesday night 21-88, with details to be published next week.

The girls will continue district play this week, hosting Anson on Friday, Jan. 16. The JV girls will tip off at 4 p.m., with the varsity girls scheduled to play following the JV boys at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Hawley will visit Albany for another round of district games on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with action beginning at 5 p.m. Albany will have an open date on Friday, Jan. 23.

The Albany Lady Lions competed on the road at Haskell on Tuesday, Jan. 6, but struggled offensively in a 52-21 district loss, according to head coach Ashlyn Bevel.

“Overall we competed hard; we just couldn’t land a basket, and Haskell was shooting lights out,” Bevel said. “I was proud of the way the girls played. It just wasn’t the best shooting night for us.”

Keeley Britting led Albany with 14 points in the loss.

The Lady Lions responded Friday, Jan. 9, with a strong home performance against TLCA, earning a 46-25 district victory. The win moved Albany into a tie with Anson for fourth place in the district standings.

“It was a great win for the Lady Lions,” Bevel said. “We pressed them hard in the first quarter and won it 20-4. Zayne Lefevre and Tinley Hefner contributed a lot with steals and assists to make that happen.”

Albany shot the ball well offensively, led by Britting with 19 points and Lefevre with 17. Hefner added 6 points, and Madi Parrott finished with 4.

“This was a good feeling after not being able to shoot the ball well against Haskell,” Bevel said. “I was proud of the way the girls competed.”

Albany is nearing the completion of the first round of district play, continuing  to work toward securing a playoff spot.

Albany’s JV girls are coming off a pair of victories, according to coach Lauren Peacock. The Lady Lions earned a 27-25 road win at Haskell in a closely contested matchup.

Sawyer Shoaf led Albany with 10 points, while Avery Gleitz had 6, Kynlee Milligan 4, Kenzee Roysdon 3, Haiden Niell 2, and Hailey Gleitz 2.

“The girls started the game strong and our offense was working,” Peacock said. “I think we got comfortable after halftime and let up defensively. We allowed them to score 22 points in the second half, and it nearly cost us the game. I’m proud of them for getting the win, but it was closer than it should have been.”

The JV girls followed with a dominant 62-6 home win against TLCA. Shoaf paced the team with 24 points, while Milligan and Hailey Gleitz added 14 points each. Niell scored 4 points, and Roysdon and Avery Gleitz finished with 3 points apiece.

“This was a great win for our girls,” Peacock said. “It’s the second game in a row where everyone scored and had success offensively. We consistently set up our offense and had success, and it was a great home game. I’m proud of their work ethic.”
