Lady Lions begin second round of district

The Albany Lady Lions opened the second round of the District 10-2A girls basketball schedule Tuesday, Jan. 14 with a 56-16 loss at Hawley in their only outing of the week.

After a district bye on Friday, Jan. 17, Albany (4-17 overall, 1-6 district) returned to action Tuesday, Jan. 21 with a 31-27 home loss against Stamford. Details will be reported next week. The Lady Lions visit Haskell at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.

First-year coach Ashlyn Bevel said the goal over the final five games is to make use of the lessons learned the first time through the district schedule.

“I think the girls, overall, have improved a lot since the first round of district,” Bevel said. “I think they’re seeing the floor a lot better. Watching film and seeing the mistakes they’ve had has helped a lot in not repeating those mistakes.”

Against Hawley, the Lady Lions were hampered by another difficult night offensively, scoring half their points in the fourth quarter. Hawley opened up a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and increased the margin in each period.

Madi Parrott led Albany with eight points.

Friday’s open date coincided with the Shackelford County Livestock Show, but Bevel said the bye and the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 20 allowed for intense workouts.

“We had a really hard practice Thursday and worked hard for about two hours,” she said. “Friday was just a shoot-around for those who could come — I only had three girls who weren’t in the stock show. Monday morning, we had practice for two hours and they went extremely hard.”
