Lady Lions back in action after break

The Albany Lady Lions got an unexpected rest during the holiday break when it was forced to pull out of the Eula tournament.

Coach Tate Thompson said the task now is to make the situation work to the team’s advantage.

“From a positive standpoint, we got a little rest and got rejuvenated,” Thompson said. “We played a lot of games trying to get in shape. Not playing those games probably hurt us a little bit because we need more experience, but maybe we’ll come back a little refreshed and be ready to go.”

Albany’s last outing was a 52-29 loss to Hawley on Tuesday, Dec. 21.

The Lady Lions (2-10 overall, 0-2 district), who withdrew from the tournament because player availability left them with little depth, resumed play on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Hamlin. The local girls lost a hard-fought game in overtime 48-44, with details to be reported next week.

Game Report

Against Hawley, Albany took a 10-9 lead in the first quarter, but saw the Lady Bearcats rally for a 22-13 halftime advantage.

Ashlyn Holson led the Lady Lions with 14 points, while Kiana Roberson added 10.

Hawley made seven 3-pointers and received 18 points from its bench. Albany hit two 3-pointers, both by Holson, and had just two points off the bench.

Albany will have an open date on Jan 21 that just happens to coincide with the Shackelford County stock show, but otherwise will be on a regular Tuesday-Friday game schedule the rest of the way.

“That helps us get into a routine as far as what days we do our lifting or competition day workouts,” Thompson said. “It helps with practice, it helps with preparation, it helps with everything to be on that Tuesday-Friday schedule.”
