Lady Lions assured of playoff spot

The Lady Lions locked up a playoff berth on Tuesday with a victory over Roscoe, improving to 5-3 in district for third place with two district games remaining in the regular season.

Albany hosted Roscoe on Tuesday, sending them home with a 45-43 loss to sew up a place in the playoffs.

The Lady Lions will play the home finale on Friday against Hawley, followed by the last regular season game in Haskell on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The JV girls are scheduled to take the court at 4:00 p.m. for the last two district bouts, with the varsity tipping off at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Lions will advance to the bi-district level of the playoffs in the first round window of next Monday or Tuesday, Feb. 17-18.

Game Details

Albany defeated Cross Plains 50-31 on Jan. 28 in the local gym.

“I was very proud of the way the girls came out and performed defensively,” coach Tate Thompson said. “I challenged them to step it up a notch in the second half of district and they certainly have. I feel like we are in a place right now to do some good things.”

Sarah Cotter was picked as offensive standout in the game, with Jaleigh Morales tapped for defense.

Scoring for the Lady Lions were Torie Fuentes 1, Brylee Moore 6, Cydney Nelson 3, Alli Hill 6, Traci Isbell 2, Carley Green 7, Morales 13, and Cotter 12.

The Lady Lions fell hard to the second place Stamford Lady Bulldogs, 65-37, last Friday on the road.

“When Stamford is at their best, they are a very good team,” Thompson said. “We caught them on a good night, and we didn’t play as well as we could have.”

The coach said he told the team to refocus after the loss and “take care of business to get into the playoffs.”

Morales was the offensive standout, while Fuentes was the defensive player of the game.

Scoring were Fuentes 9, Moore 3, Nelson 3, Hill 7, Isbell 2, Green 1, Morales 8, and Cotter 4.

JV Girls Results

The JV girls lost both games last week, falling to 1-4 in district.

The JV posted a 28-19 loss in Cross Plains.

“The girls fought hard against Cross Plains,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “This group did a fantastic job of playing hard with only five players.”

Lizzie Chavez was the leading scorer, doing a “great job of taking the ball to the basket.”

Scoring were Briley Tabor 2, Chelsy Parsons 3, Gracie Price 2, and Chavez 12.

The JV also fell to Stamford 49-31.

“It was a good game for our girls, but we couldn’t pull it out,” Wilson said. “Presley Green did a fantastic job scoring for us, and the girls didn’t give up.”
