Lady Bulldogs win over Baird

The Moran Lady Bulldogs basketball teampicked up its first District 13-1A victory last week, beating Baird 36-18 on Tuesday, Jan. 11, before falling to Cross Plains 76-17 on Friday, Jan. 14.

Moran (6-14 overall, 1-2 district) hosted Eula on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Results will be reported next week.

Girls Results

The Lady Bulldogs will play Rising Star on Friday, Jan. 21, in a game switched to Moran to accommodate Moran’s participation in the Shackelford County livestock show. The return game on Feb. 8 will now be played at Rising Star.

In the 36-18 victory at Baird, the Lady Bulldogs overcame an 8-6 first-quarter deficit to lead 21-10 at halftime. Moran pulled further ahead with a 15-8 edge in the second half.

“Everything worked well,” Lady Bulldogs coach John Hughes said. “We had a good game plan. The girls executed it well and we took care of business.”

Hannah Noble and Johnnie Hise each scored 16 points to lead Moran. Alli Scott and Emily Murk had two points apiece.

The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a big rebounding effort, grabbing 51 as a team. Hise had 16 boards with Noble and Scott each grabbing nine. Scott (five) and Noble (four) combined for nine of Moran’s 13 steals.

In the 76-17 home loss to Cross Plains, the Lady Bulldogs fell behind 20-4 in the first quarter and trailed 39-7 at halftime. Moran doubled its scoring output with seven points in the third quarter to trail 66-14.

Hise had 10 points and 12 rebounds for her second doube-double of the week. Samantha Hinkle scored six points and Julianna Cottle had one. Harmony Slaughter grabbed nine rebounds.

Boys Basketball

The Moran boys basketball did not play as illness among the players forced the postponement of its district opener against Cross Plains.

The Bulldogs (1-8 overall), who had an open date on Tuesday, Jan. 11, played their first district game against Eula on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Results will be reported next week.

Moran will host Rising Star on Friday, Jan. 21. The game with Cross Plains will be played Monday, Jan. 24, at Cross Plains in conjunction with the junior high games between the schools.

Junior High Schedule

Moran’s home junior high basketball games against Baird were moved from Monday, Jan 17, to Thursday, Jan. 20 (tonight) because of the Martin Luther King holiday. Results will be reported next week.

Moran will visit Cross Plains for games on Monday, Jan. 24.
