Lady Bulldogs keep playoff chances alive

The Moran Lady Bulldogs kept their playoff chances alive last week despite dropping their two District 13-1A girls basketball outings.

On Tuesday, Feb. 1, Moran lost 69-20 at Cross Plains. After being pushed back a day because of weather, the Lady Bulldogs lost 76-11 at Eula on Saturday, Feb. 5.

Moran (7-19 overall, 2-7 district) entered Tuesday’s regular season finale at Rising Star a half-game ahead of Baird for fourth place in the district standings. Baird had two games remaining and needed to win both to pass the Lady Bulldogs for 13-1A’s final playoff spot.

If a district playoff with Baird is required, it will be played Thursday, Feb. 10 (tonight) at Breckenridge.

In the 69-20 loss at Cross Plains, Moran fell behind 18-7 in the first quarter and trailed 27-11 at halftime.

Johnnie Hise led Moran with nine points, followed by Hannah Noble with seven and Alli Scott with four. Hise also had 11 rebounds and four steals.

In the 76-11 loss at Eula, the Lady Pirates jumped out in front 24-3 in the first quarter and led 53-8 at the half.

Hannah Rogers scored seven points to lead Moran with Noble scoring four.

Boys Basketball

The Moran Bulldogs suffered losses in their two District 13-1A boys basketball games last week, falling 67-26 at Cross Plains on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and 77-12 at Eula on Saturday, Feb. 5.

The Bulldogs visited Rising Star on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Moran hosts May in its final home game on Friday, Feb. 11.

Moran fell behind 20-5 in the first quarter and trailed 34-9 at halftime. Caleb York led the Bulldogs with 10 points, followed by Arren Hawley with six. Tyler Waddell and Ellis Hise each scored four points, and Connor Hail had two.

With just five players available against Eula, the Bulldogs scored all their points in the second quarter. Eula led 33-0 at the end of the first quarter. Hawley scored eight points to lead Moran with Hise scoring four.

Junior High

Moran closed out its junior high basketball schedule Monday against Rising Star.

The Lady Bulldogs won 23-22, rallying from a 13-6  halftime deficit and outscoring Rising Star 7-4 in the fourth quarter. Ashlyn Crawford led Moran with 13 points. Cassandra Mendez added four points, while Maekayla Kersey, LeAnna Sikes, and Kacenda Thompkins scored two apiece.

In the boys game, Moran lost 44-2. Landon Moreno scored Moran’s lone basket. The Bulldogs had just five players available, while Rising Star suited up 12.
