The Albany Lady Lions fell short in their quest to reach the state volleyball tournament, falling to Wink 20-25, 18-25, 25-27 in the semifinals of the Region-I-2A Tournament on Friday at San Angelo.

“I’m happy that the girls got to experience the real regional tournament this year,” Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said. “They set high goals for themselves this season and continued to get closer each day.”

Albany ended its season with a 32-6 record.

Reneau said falling behind early, even if just by a few points, made the difference against Wink.

“We weren’t able to dig ourselves out of the hole,”  she said. “We just kind of played catch-up. Something I was really proud of was the girls never gave up, even in that last set, and fought until the end.”

Wink (42-4) defeated Miles in four sets Saturday to advance to state for the 14th time.

“They’re definitely a respectable team, more experienced,” Reneau said. “We would love to have given them a different match. I felt like we broke our momentum way too many times.”

Albany qualified for the regional tourney on Tuesday, Nov. 9, with a 25-14, 25-9, 25-16 victory over Quanah at Munday.

“We have a solid group of leaders that got the energy up early in the game and never let down.” Reneau said. “The girls stuck to the game plan and got the job done. I’m just really proud of each of the girls and their hard work.”
