JV Lions win 2 of 3 in local event

The JV Lion baseball team won two out of three games at the local tournament held last week and were on the road Tuesday for a game in Cisco.

Several varsity players joined the team this week following the end of the basketball season, giving coach David Fairchild enough players to put his varsity squad on the field in a tournament this weekend.

The Lions are playing in the Hamlin tournament starting Thursday (today), continuing over the next two days.

Both the varsity and JV are scheduled to travel to Anson on March 5 for a pair of games against the Tigers.

The varsity will also participate in a tournament in Windthorst on March 7-9.

The JV opened the local JV tournament last Thursday with a 5-4 win over Bluff Dale.

“We got off to a tough start on the mound, walking six batters and committing an error in the first inning that gave them an early 3-0 lead,” Fairchild said. “We scratched our way back in that game.”

Luke Ivy went two for three, ending the game with a walk-off single, Fairchild said.

The coach added that Cade Neve and Max Balliew both had good games on the mound.

The JV lost to Coahoma, 6-3, in the second game.

“It was tied 3-3 late in the game, but four deadly errors put Coahoma up 6-3,” Fairchild said. “Defense is the key to all sports, and it’s hard to win when you have four errors in one inning.”

Colby Hargett got two hits in the game, while Neve, Ivy, William Webb, and Christian Morales had one each.

The JV got back on the winning track Friday with a 10-6 win over Cisco.

“We played good defense, and I thought that Cooper Fairchild and Luke Ivy pitched well considering the weather conditions,” Fairchild said. “We had some errors in the third that let Cisco get closer to us.”

Morales and Ivy each had a triple and a single, while Neve had two singles in the game. Fairchild, Webb, and Hargett each got a single in the game.

The JV is now 3-1 for the season.
