The Albany Lions junior varsity football team remained undefeated with a 28-8 victory last Thursday at Haskell.

Lute Wheeler passed for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion to help Albany (3-0) build a 22-0 lead. Branson Beal and Ashton Bailey each ran for touchdowns, while Houston Heatly and Cason Fairchild had TD receptions.

“Overall, I was very pleased with how our guys kept their composure and dominated on both sides of the ball,” coach David Fairchild said.

Albany returns to the road Thursday (tonight) at Anson as part of a tripleheader with the junior high teams. The action gets underway at 4:00 p.m. with the seventh grade with the eighth grade and JV to follow.

The Lions opened the scoring on a 21-yard pass from Wheeler to Heatly. The score was set up when Bryson Herring intercepted a Haskell pass to give Albany good field position.

Beal scored on an 18-yard run and Wheeler connected with Tyler Chapman for the conversion.

Wheeler then found Cason Fairchild for a 24-yard scoring pass. Beal ran for the conversion.

After Haskell scored, Bailey answered with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Cason Fairchild joined Herring in picking off a pass on defense.

“Heatly, Wyatt Beard, Chapman, and Cole Read had good games,” David Fairchild said.

The coach said Albany showed good balance on offense.

“Cason had several big catches along with Houston,” he said. “I thought our backs (Beal, Chapman and Bailey) ran hard. Our offensive line (John Birkla, Laithe Leech, Ethan Green, Read, and Hagen Miller) had a good night.”
