The Albany Lions JV football team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 25-12 to Seymour on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The JV’s scheduled game for Thursday, Sept. 15 (tonight), at Hawley has been cancelled. Instead, the JV will suit up with the varsity to provide depth after the varsity suffered a rash of injuries.

The next scheduled JV game is Thursday, Sept. 22 at Comanche.

Against Seymour, Albany had a chance to pull even after trailing 13-0 at halftime, but fell victim to three turnovers.

“We played a good football team in Seymour,” coach David Fairchild said. “I thought we came out slow in the first half, but I was pleased with how we responded in the second half.”

The Lions also had three takeaways with Mason McCloy and Calhan Fairchild intercepting passes, while Jaxson Street recovered a fumble.

McCloy’s interception set up Albany’s first score, a 4-yard run by Breylon Billington. Billington, who rushed for 88 yards, added a 10-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Seymour responded to Albany’s touchdowns with scoring drives to keep the Lions from getting closer than seven points. The Lions’ last two possessions ended in turnovers.

Albany gained 282 total yards, 264 of it on the ground. Shawn Keen ran for 87 yards and Calhan Fairchild added 51. Brody Oliver was 6 of 11 passing for 18 yards with two interceptions.

“We moved the ball up and down the field with runs from Billington, Huffman Heatly, Calhan Fairchild, Shawn Keen, and Brody Oliver,” David Fairchild said.

Seymour passed for 379 of its 385 total yards, completing 28 of 42 attempts.

“Our defense woke up in the second half,” David Fairchild said. “Ethan Green, Woods Peterson, Calhan Fairchild, Jackson Street, Heatly, Laithe Leech, and Tristan Howe made some good tackles.”
