JV boys kick off season

The Albany Lions junior varsity boys basketball team tipped off its season Saturday with a 34-4 home victory over Roby.

The game was the only one at the high school level last week for Albany after the Lady Lions pulled out of their tournament.

The Lions opened the game with an 11-0 run and were in control the rest of the way.

“It was a starting point, and that’s what we talked about in the locker room before the game,” Albany coach Ryder Peacock said. “The goal was to get up and down the floor, run some transitions.”

Peacock said establishing a transition game was a key factor this early in the season.

“In a game like that, you’re not going to have a lot of offensive sets,” he said. “You’re going to try to score off your defensive pressure as much as possible.”

Brayden Watson led all scorers with 13 points, recording the first eight points of the game. Lute Wheeler added 11 points, scoring the last seven of the game.

Luke Marshall added five points with Branson Beal scoring three and Bryson Herring two.

“We were able to give the guys a lot of playing time,” Peacock said. “It was good to see them work together. There were 10 of them, and I didn’t feel like there was any dropoff.”

Peacock said earlier this week that the JV would not play Tuesday at Comanche as scheduled. Albany’s next game is Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Archer City.

“We have a big 16-team JV tournament here on Dec. 2 and 4,” Peacock said. “Albany will have two teams playing, so there’ll be a lot of basketball going on up here.”

Varsity Boys

Peacock said the Lions’ varsity schedule will remain on hold as long as the football team is in the playoffs.

“I hope I don’t see them in the gym until the end of December,” he said. “It will give the JV guys more opportunities to practice and play some games. It’s good for everybody.”
