The Cubs and Lady Cubs have been busy over the last week, playing two sets of games since returning from the Christmas break.

The teams will play Cross Plains next Monday, with games starting at 5:30 p.m. in both locations. The girls will host the Buffaloes, while the boys will be on the road in Cross Plains.

The Cubs split games against Hawley at home last Thursday in the first set of games since the break.

The seventh grade Cubs defeated the Bearcats 34-18. Scoring were Houston Heatly 5, Bryson Herring 2, Cole Read 1, Lute Wheeler 8, Adam Hill 14, and Lanxton Viertel 4.

“We started slow, but got a little offense going in the second half to get the lead,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “Defensively, we continue to play well, causing several turnovers and grabbing rebounds.”

The 8A boys lost to Hawley 44-38. Scoring were London Fuentes 18, Caden Price 9, Cole Chapman 3, and Cameron Nelson 8.

“We actually led in this game and were up nine points in the second half,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “Unfortunately, the guys started to force things offensively against the press and that didn’t work. We need to be able to make better decisions and execute better.”

The 8B team won its game against Hawley 17-15. No other information was available.

The seventh grade girls also won against Hawley 22-13 on the road.

“We executed our press well and had a lot of opportunities off of turnovers,” coach Lauren Peacock said. “We missed 19 free throws, so we will be working on that area of the game.”

The coach commended Callan Edgar for defense, along with Kiana Roberson for rebounding and getting put backs.

Scoring were Robin Lucas 2, Robyn Trail 1, Ashlyn Holson 2, Roberson 14, Maci Hatchett 2, and Braylyn Abbate 1.

The 8A girls fell to Hawley 36-16. Scoring were Briley Tabor 5, Brilee Moore 5, Haily Cox 2, Presley Green 2, Chelsy Parsons 1, Gracie Price 1.

The 8B team also lost to Hawley, 11-6. Scoring were Chloe Broadus 3, Leddie Leech 1, and Samantha Hinkle 2.

Haskell Results

The eighth grade boys were edged out by Haskell on Monday, 30-29.

“Our discipline was much better in this game, and we did a better job of limiting the turnovers,” Fuentes said. “We still struggled at times against the press, but we need to learn discipline and play good situational basketball.”

Scoring were Fuentes 13, Price 9, Cole Chapman 2, and Andrew Leverton 5.

The 7th White team also lost in Haskell 18-9. Scoring were Tyler Chapman 5 and Brayden Watson 4.

“They played a good first half, but it got away from us in the second half,” coach David Fairchild said. “They kept battling and never gave up.”

Offensive standouts were Chapman and Watson, along with Jayden Lucas and Sterlin Hobbs on defense.

The 7th Red team beat Haskell 31-12.

“This was a big win for us,” Fairchild said. “I thought we played great all night as a team.”

Scoring were Hill 19, Viertel 6, Wheeler 4, Read 1, Heatly 1.

The eighth grade Lady Cubs picked up a 28-25 win over Haskell.

“This game was back and forth a lot,” Lauren Peacock said. “We were down by one going into the fourth. Once again, our defense and press were solid, and we created turnovers and took care of the ball.”

The coach commended Roberson for her play at both ends of the courts, along with Lucas, Edgar, and Brooklyn Abbate on defense.

Scoring were Brooklyn Abbate 2, Jaci Chapman 4, Holson 2, Roberson 19, and Braylyn Abbate 1.

The two seventh grade teams both lost to Haskell.

The 7A girls fell 30-24 to the Maidens.

“The girls played an exciting game against Haskell,” Norton said. “Their aggressive defense made the difference in the game, but we came up short in the fourth.”

Scoring were Moore 14, Green 5, Tabor 2, Parsons 2, and Cox 1.

The 7B team lost to Haskell 17-4. Scoring were Broadus 3, and Leech 1.

The eighth grade girls will compete in a tournament on Thursday and Saturday in Throckmorton. Albany will play Newcastle at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, then return on Saturday for two games starting at 12:00 noon against Baird and at 3:00 p.m. versus Throckmorton.
