The Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs opened their track and field seasons Monday, Feb. 28, with a meet at Anson.

In the girls competition, Albany athletes had 11 first places – nine in seventh grade events and two in eighth grade.

“The girls did very well,” coach Missy Dutchover said. “It was a ribbon meet, so they received ribbons for whatever place they finished in their heats.”

In the boys competition, Albany won three events in the eighth grade division and two in the seventh grade division.

“This was a good start for us in the field events,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “With the little time that we have had to work with these guys technically, I thought they did very well.”

Peacock was also pleased with results in the running events.

“We had some good performances for our first meet out,” he said. “The seventh grade really came away with some top finishes in the 100, 200, and mile relay, while the eighth grade saw some top finishes in the 100 and 200, along with  some top-three finishes in both the 800 and mile relays. Time-wise, the guys that ran last year are ahead of where we were at this time, so we felt pretty good about that.”

The junior high teams next compete on Friday, March 11, at Cisco.
