TheAlbany Junior High tennis program conducted intrasquad play last week in preparation for its district tournament.

This week, however, has seen a series of obstacles. Monday-Tuesday, April 22-23 was taken up with the high school district tournament.

Junior high students were involved in STAAR testingonbothTuesdayand Wednesday, April 23-24.

“On Thursday (today), we’ll have another set of intrasquadmatches,”coach M.J. Reneau said. “On Friday, we’ll go during the period.”

Reneau said a dual meet withMundayscheduledfor Monday, April 29 has been dropped.

“Munday decided not to come, so practice will look a little different next week,” she said. “Even if they could have come, we would have had to cancel because our district meet has been moved up to May 2 and May 3.”

The district tournament will be played at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene. Girls will play one day and boys the other, but plans have not yet been finalized.

Reneau said she’s been pleased with how junior high practices have gone so far.

“We have some eighth graders who played last year and stuck with tennis,” she said. “They’re doing a great job. We have some seventh graders who I think will do really well once they hit high school if they’ll stick with it.
