Jr. high teams win 4 of 5 against Hawley

Both junior high basketball girls teams posted wins on Monday at the local gym, with the boys playing in Hawley.

The Lady Cubs will host Haskell on Monday, Jan. 25 starting at 5:30 p.m., while the Cubs will play in Haskell also starting at 5:30 p.m.

The girls Red team earned a 27-17 win against Hawley.

“The girls played great defense throughout the game,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “There was a lot of communication between the girls that helped them be successful.”

The coach praised the group for working well together and the improvement they are showing.

Caroline Holson was the offensive leader.

Albany 10 11 1 5 - 27

Hawley 7 3 4 3 - 17

Scoring for Albany were Abi Hale 2, Caroline Holson 10, Avery Everitt 1, Julia Vega 4, Makenna McNeill 6, and Gabby Lopez 4. The win gave the group a 4-2 record.

The girls White team also won, 32-25, to improve to 5-2 for the season.

“The girls played a wonderful game,” coach Dakota Fowler said. “They played great defense and rebounded well.

Albany 3 11 5 13 - 32

Hawley 11 6 2 6 - 25

Scoring were Kaisley Bartee 4, Caroline Chapman 12, Mimi Ivy 4, and Bralee Clark 10.

The eighth grade Cubs lost 24-18 in Hawley.

“Hawley beat us by a much larger margin the last time we played them, but we came into this game with a different defensive plan,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “Our goal was to play great defense, and the kids executed well.”

The coach said the team almost pulled out the victory.

“Overall, I believe that this is the best game we have played this season, and I’m proud that our kids continue to improve.”

The seventh grade boys won 28-25 over Hawley.

Scorers were Mason McCloy 4, Cade Fairchild 9, Huffman Heatly 7, Brody Oliver 3, Cort Peterson 3, and Calhan Fairchild 2.

The B team won 13-11, with Brody Brown scoring 11 and John Birkla 2.
