The seventh grade girls basketball team and the combined boys B team opened the season on Saturday at the Woodson tournament.

Both groups split games with opponents at the tournament.

The two girls teams and the eighth grade boys will host Cross Plains on Thursday (today) starting at 5:00 p.m.

The boys will be on the road to Haskell next Monday, Nov. 25, while the girls will host Haskell teams at home. Games will start at 5:30 p.m. at both locations.

The seventh grade girls defeated Notre Dame in the first game of the tournament at Woodson, earning a 22-12 win.

“This was a great way to start the season,” coach Dakota Fowler said. “The girls came out and gave it their best. I was proud of how they worked the ball, and everyone was able to shoot the ball.”

Scoring for Albany were Caroline Holson 6, Abi Hale 4, Kenzie Neve 4, Makenna McNeill 6, Katie Breeden 2.

The girls lost to Woodson 18-10 in the second game.

“That was a rough game and very aggressive,” the coach said. “Our girls held their own and played a good game.”

Scoring were Holson 4, McNeill 4, Breeden 2.

The combined boys B team lost the first round to Notre Dame, 20-12.

“It was our first game, and the guys had to shake some rust off early,” boys coach Ryder Peacock said. “We took a lot of shots in the first half but just couldn’t get anything to fall for us. We finally got going in the third quarter and closed the gap in the fourth.”

The coach said the team did a good job of battling back.

“Defensively, we created some opportunities with steals and did a good job of rebounding,” he said.

Scoring for the Cubs were Brayden Watson 7, and J.J. Clark 5.

Watson and Clark were tapped as standouts for offense by the coach, while Kolt Koemel was named for defense.

The Albany boys won their second game, beating Paint Creek 15-11.

“We got off to a strong start on offense, making some solid shots that fell for us this time,” Peacock said. “Ty Richards and Brayden Watson did a good job of playing the passing lanes and creating turnovers.”

Watson and Clark were named offensive standouts and Koemel and Richards were picked for defense.

Scoring were Watson 5, Clark 5, Richards 2, Sutton Liming 2, Koemel 1.
