The Cubs won district basketball games during the last week, while the girls teams had a harder time looking for a win.

Both the seventh and eighth grade boys will play at the Olney tournament on Saturday, while the eighth grade girls are playing in a two-day tourney in Throckmorton starting Thursday (today).

The Cubs and Lady Cubs will be in action again on Monday, Jan. 20 against Stamford starting at 5:30 p.m. The girls will be playing at home, while the boys will be on the road in Stamford.

The two eighth grade teams opened the second round of district action last Thursday, Jan. 9 in Cross Plains.

The boys posted a 50-10 win.

“This was a solid team effort by our guys,” coach Jimmy Fuentes said. “They did a good job of running the floor and scoring off transitions.”

The coach commended the team for their defense as well.

“The guys put a lot of pressure on Cross Plains and caused turnovers to give us more scoring opportunities,” he said.

Scoring for the Cubs were J.J. Clark 5, Cason Fairchild 2, Cole Read 8, Lute Wheeler 5, Adam Hill 13, Zane Waggoner 2, Kolt Koemel 2, Lanxton Viertel 14.

The eighth grade girls dropped a 29-25 game in Cross Plains.

“We fell a little short against a quick Cross Plains team,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “I feel we might not have been ready to play. We had some good takes to the baskets from Ashlyn Holson, and there were a few good steals on defense.”

Scoring were Holson 12, Robin Lucas 3, Brooklyn Abbate 2, and Kiana Roberson 8.

Boys Win at Home

Both boys teams won at home on Monday against Haskell.

The eighth grade earned a 26-11 win.

“This was a good win with lots of good defense,” coach David Fairchild said.

Scoring for the Cubs were Read 2, Wheeler 3, Hill 12, Waggoner 3, Viertel 6.

The seventh grade team defeated the Indians 39-33.

“Our guys did a lot better job executing our offense and taking advantage of scoring opportunities early in this ball game,” Fuentes said. “We did have a period where we lost our discipline a little bit that gave Haskell a chance to close the gap. We were able to regroup and pull out the win.”

Scoring were Ashton Bailey 6, Dalton Richards 12, Branson Beal 10, Landon Balliew 4, and Hagan Miller 7.

Girls Drop 2 on Road

The eighth grade girls lost 46-15 in Haskell on Monday, going to 4-3 in district.

“This was a tough loss to a good Haskell team,” Wilson said. “There were lots of hardships the girls had to overcome, and it was a tough environment to play in.”

Scoring were Holson 6, Lucas 3, Callan Edgar 4, Emily Schedule 2.

The seventh graders were edged out 21-16 on Monday.

“This was the first game of the second round,” coach Dakota Fowler said. “The girls played well together, passing the ball around and waiting for open shots.”

She commended the team for “giving it their all” for the entire game.

Scoring were Caroline Holson 1, Averie Burns 2, Abi Grace Hale 2, Kenzie Neve 6, and Makenna McNeill 5.
