Jr. high teams entered in tourneys

The Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs basketball teams had a busy week with games on Thursday, Jan 20, against Hawley and Monday, Jan. 24 against Haskell.

The seventh and eighth grade boys teams will compete in the Breckenridge tournament on Saturday, Jan. 29, while the girls will send one team to the Guthrie tournament.

The junior high teams will close out their schedules against Stamford on Monday, Jan. 31. The girls teams will be at home with the boys on the road.

Eighth Grade Boys

Albany defeated Hawley 50-10 last Thursday, then pulled out a 27-25 victory over Haskell on Monday.

Against Hawley, the Cubs scored the first 20 points and finished with eight 3-pointers.

“I thought our offense was on fire and that was backed with some hard-nosed defense,” eighth grade coach David Fair­child said.

Cade Fairchild scored 13 points, and Mason McCloy had 11, hitting three 3-pointers.

Calhan Fairchild added eight points, followed by Brody Oliver with seven, Huffman Heatly with six, Lane Helle with three, and Tristan Howe with two.

Against Haskell, Oliver converted both ends of a one-and-one opportunity with 1:03 remaining to give Albany a 26-25 lead.

The Cubs led 9-0 early in the second quarter before Haskell rallied for a 13-13 halftime tie. The Indians led 20-13 in the third quarter before the Cubs got within two by the end of the period, 22-20.

Heatly led Albany with eight points, while Helle added six, and Oliver finished with five. Calhan Fairchild scored four points with McCloy and Cade Fairchild each scoring two.

Seventh Grade Boys

The Cubs dropped a 24-13 decision to Hawley last Thursday before bouncing back to beat Haskell 21-13 on Monday.

Against Hawley, Albany fell behind 7-4 in the first quarter and trailed 13-8 at halftime.

Sam Vickers and Wesley Gleitz each scored four points to lead the Cubs. Jack Nail and Colter Edgar had two points apiece, with Connor Smith scoring one.

Against Haskell, the Cubs led 4-1 in the first quarter and 13-3 at halftime.

Smith and Nail each scored seven points to lead Albany, with Vickers adding six. Edgar had one point.

Combined Boys

Albany’s combined team lost 17-7 to Haskell on Monday.

All of the Cubs’ scoring came in the second half.

Judson Rogers led the team with four points. Shooter Shoaf added two and Ryan Turner had one.

Girls Red Team

The Albany girls junior high Red team suffered a 30-16 loss on Thursday at Hawley.

Down 9-7 after one quarter, the Lady Cubs were outscored 12-2 over the next two periods as Hawley pulled away.

Caroline Chapman led the Lady Cubs with six points while Kaisley Bartee added five. Alli McDaniel scored three points, and Mimi Ivy scored two.

Girls White Team

The Lady Cubs pulled out a 19-15 victory Thursday at Hawley, overcoming sporadic offense.

Albany trailed 4-3 after the first quarter, then surged to a 12-8 halftime lead. Hawley tied the game at 12-12 in the third before the Lady Cubs pulled back in front in the fourth.

Zayne Lefevre scored nine points for Albany, seven in the second quarter, while Amber Miramontes added seven. Hattie Braly scored two points, and Charlee Hefner had one.

Girls Mixed Team

With just 11 total players available because of illness, Albany combined the Red and White teams Monday for a 26-15 loss at Haskell.

Albany led 6-4 after the first quarter, but was outscored 12-2 over the next two periods.

Ivy scored six points to lead the Lady Cubs, followed by Braylee Clark with four, Miramontes with three, and Chapman with two.
