Jr. high girls split first matches

The Lady Cubs opened the season at home last Thursday, with the eighth grade winning both games over Wylie East, while the seventh grade teams came up short.

The local teams are scheduled to play on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with the seventh grade teams staying home for a 4:30 p.m. start against Abilene Christian Middle School. The 8A girls are playing in Newcastle, starting at 5:00 p.m., followed by the high school varsity game at 6:00 p.m.

The 8A girls beat Wylie East 25-11, 25-22 last week.

“The girls came out really hard, winning the first set by 14,” coach Dakota Fowler said. “Robyn Trail had a good kill in the game. Everyone hustled, and there were no dropped balls.”

Robin Lucas had nine serves, including six in a row, for the team, and Kiana Roberson posted five straight serves.

The 8B girls also won their game against Wylie East 25-12, 25-18.

“These girls also won big in the first set to start well,” Fowler said. “Ashley Sanchez had five serves in a row, and Sidney Russell had 10 in a row.”

The coach also credited Chey’Anne Weaver with a back row kill.

The 7A team lost 16-25, 19-25 to Wylie.

Serving for points were Makenna McNeill 7, Caroline Holson 4, Abi Grace Hale 3, Ann Davis 3, and Jalea Bowman 2.

The 7B team fell 19-25, 19-25 to Wylie.

Scoring on serves were seventh graders Averie Burns 2, Julia Vega 4, and Hannah Mackenzie 4.
